A Couple of Mixed Drinks

Alcoholic beverages come in many shapes and sizes. From beer, which has more styles than the most discerning beer connoisseur  can keep up with (IPA, Stout, Porter, Wit, Barleywine, etc) to neat liquors such as the hundreds of brands of whiskey and bourbon. Personally I would drink a beer over nearly anything, but when I am drinking hard liquor, I prefer a nice clean bourbon like a 20 year Pappy. Occasionally, however, I like something fruity and different, so I came up with some nice mixed drinks to appeal to a variety of palettes. This is not an inclusive list, but if you are a fan of mixed drinks, I suggest you give them a try. The majority of them are what some would call creepers as you cannot taste the alcohol very well and the sweetness of the added sugars (from cordials or simple syrup) mask it and you will be feeling woozy before you know it, so use caution when drinking anything and, most importantly, never drink if you are underage in your local area.

This one is very simple with only a few ingredients and looks pretty too. I created it for a friend’s Jaws themed party and it was a big hit.

Shark Bite

2 oz Citrus Vodka
2 oz Blue Curacao
4 oz Lemonade
Splash of grenadine

Shake Vodka, Curacao, and lemonade with ice. Strain into a glass. Splash of grenadine floated on top. Enjoy.

This next one is even simpler and tastes even better. The spiced rum brings out the sweetness of the Curacao and after two or three your going to wonder how the heck you got so messed up so fast.

Blue Creeper

2 oz Spiced Rum
2 oz Blue Curacao
4 oz Lemonade

Shake ingredients with ice and serve over ice.

The last two were cocktails to sip on, this next one is a blended shot and is meant to be kicked back with friends. The overpowering sweetness makes it an easy drink to trow back and no chaser is needed.

Purple Meanie

Yields 8 shots

2 oz Bacardi Tangerine
2 oz Absolute
2 oz Blue Curacao
2 oz Triple Sec
1 oz Grenadine
3 oz Lemonade

Shake all ingredients in cocktail shaker with ½ cup ice. Strain into shot glasses. Warning: unless you are a heavy drinker, I would not recommend more than three of these shots per person.

This drink is a little more complicated as it requires some muddling. If you are not sure what muddling is, place the ingredients in the bottom of a glass or cocktail shaker and mash them with a muddler and if you don’t have a muddler, you can use a spoon or a shot glass works well as well. Also, this drink is sweet, but you can still pull out the liquor if you take your time and sip on the drink.

Blueberry Pinball Wizard

Yields 12 ounces

6 + 4 fresh blueberries
3 fresh mint leaves
2 oz simple syrup
4 oz bourbon
1 t honey
2 oz agave nectar
1 oz pineapple juice
1 oz mango juice

Muddle 6 blueberries, mint leaves, and simple syrup in a tall glass. Shake bourbon, agave nectar, pineapple juice, and mango juice in a cocktail shaker with ½ cup ice. Strain into glass with muddled blueberries and mint. Top with ice. Drizzle honey on top and garnish with fresh blueberries.

When it comes to mixed drinks, try something crazy. You will be surprised how well certain things go together. Also, a simple liquor and mixer can be nearly as delicious as any of these drinks. Enjoy your alcohol responsibly and if you have a problem with alcohol consumption, please seek help immediately. I am not here to encourage anyone to start or continue drinking.

As always, if you have questions, or would like to see a drink idea added here, let me know.
